SUSRIS 2010 Annual Summary

January 1, 2011

Editor’s Note:

As we turn the page to SUSRIS’ ninth year as the chronicle of developments in the relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia we would like to thank you for your interest and support. 2010 added an important new chapter in the generations-old connections between Americans and Saudis as the two countries worked together across the spectrum of mutual interests and issues including regional security, trade and investment, economic development, countering terrorism, bolstering reform and much more.

We appreciate that you include SUSRIS among your resources to keep up with these developments. In 2010 we added important new insights to the SUSRIS archive of articles, interviews and special reports including the celebration of shared historical highlights, the global economic recovery, new social and educational opportunities, the pursuit of peace and stability in the region, expanding interfaith dialogue, business and trade partnerships, defense and security cooperation plus much more.

SUSRIS has worked hard to stay on top of developments of interest to you. In addition to the regular articles and interviews we were pleased to provide on-scene coverage of the highly successful US-Saudi Business Opportunities Forum in Chicago in April, sponsored by the Committee for International Trade and the U.S.-Saudi Arabian Business Council; the annual Arab-US Policymakers Conference in Washington in October organized by the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations; and the annual meeting of the Middle East Studies Association in San Diego in November.

SUSRIS also completed a major transition and expansion of our online resources to improve access, navigation and ease of use. Plus, it’s, well, prettier. The SUSRIS domain name shifted from a lengthy “dot org” address to the simple SUSRIS.com location. We also added sister web sites to increase the diversity of materials that help you keep up with developments in the Saudi-US relationship. These are: SUSRISblog.com, which shares materials apart from the articles, interviews, special sections and special reports on the main SUSRIS.com site; there is, as well, a video gallery called SUSRIStube.com, which features videos from around the World Wide Web as well as items produced by the SUSRIS staff. Speaking of staff and expansions, this year we welcomed Myles Murphy and Elizabeth Pfiester to the SUSRIS team and we look forward to featuring their research and writing in the coming year.

We hope you will take a look at the new SUSRIS Blog and SUSRIS video gallery, if you haven’t already.  Not all postings on SUSRISblog and SUSRIStube are circulated via the SUSRIS e-newsletter so be sure to check the RSS feed on the new sites as a way to make sure you keep up with all the material SUSRIS produces for your use.  [ SUSRISblog RSS / SUSRIStube RSS ] As with every aspect of SUSRIS coverage, we hope you’ll share your feedback on how we can improve to meet your information needs. [Email:PatRyan@SUSRIS.com ] We also hope you will encourage your friends and colleagues to join the SUSRIS e-newsletter list. There’s a sign up form on the SUSRIS.com web pages. It’s easy to do and free.

While you are getting others signed up for SUSRIS, remember to get your name on distribution for the daily “News Review” from the Saudi-US Trade Group (SUSTG). SUSRIS is currently produced under the aegis of SUSTG and their web site is another companion of SUSRIS.

Lastly, we’d like to mention that SUSRIS has another sibling, the Saudi-British Relations Information Service (SBRIS) which is featured on the www.SaudiBrit.com web site.  There you’ll find articles, interviews and special reports that chronicle developments in the historic partnership between the “two Kingdoms.”

Today we are pleased to provide a table of 2010 resources that were produced for you by SUSRIS on the many issues of importance in Saudi-U.S. relations. A quick scan of the list of special sections, articles, interviews, special reports; Blog postings and video posts will give you a snapshot of the year’s developments. Take some time to drill down into the stories and materials that are important to you and tell us how we can improve this service.

Best wishes for a healthy and prosperous 2011 !
